Bellarine Historical Society on FaceBook

It’s great to see the Bellarine Historical Society with their own FaceBook page.

Social Media is a great opportunity to help promote societies on the web.

The Society is open every Sunday in January and the first Sunday of the month for the rest of the year (except September).  The hours are 1.30 pm to 4.30 pm.

Plan to make the most of your visit – prepare details and documents for the names you’re researching and bring them with you so you have your own information at your fingertips.

Geelong & South Western Rail Heritage Society

Biregurra Railway StationI do love it when groups in our region progress to having a real web and blog site.  We have an addition to this category in the last month.

Obviously they still want to add more to their site but they are well and truly up and running and it’s worth checking them out.  The Geelong Rail Heritage Society web site includes an amazing range of up-coming tours and events.  They also have a great range of books / publications.

Congratulations and keep up the good work.

When and where was this photo taken?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe Bellarine Historical Society presents Our Boys at War – a tribute to the local lads and indeed all soldiers that served in the First World War.

The Society has prepared a display in the Old Court House Museum to remember the centenary of the battle for Gallipoli.  Working in conjunction with the Drysdale RSL, the Historical Society is creating a ‘walk into the trenches’ display with memorabilia, photos, written articles and an audio/visual display pertaining to WWI.  [This photo was taken in the entrance to the Old Court House Museum in the last few days.]

Following a very moving RSL ANZAC Day remembrance service at the Cenotaph in Drysdale, a very special memento of Gallipoli will be moved into the Museum next door and the display will then be open to the public.  We hope that the whole community will take the opportunity to visit and remember those sacrifices so long ago.

The Museum will be open for this special display from 10:00am – 4:00pm both Saturday 25th April and Sunday 26th April, then the following 1st Sunday of the month in May, June and July between 1:30 – 4.:30.  We would also welcome contact by any schools or groups that would prefer a private visit during weekdays.

BendigoBankThe Bellarine Historical Society and the Drysdale RSL acknowledge the sponsorship and support of the Bendigo Community Bank for this project.

Melbourne Cup Day – Research in Geelong!

"New" Geelong Heritage Centre

The Geelong Heritage Centre, top floor, National Wool Museum

Tomorrow is Melbourne Cup Day [Tuesday 4 November 2014 for those living under a bush].  In Melbourne that means that your favourite research centre may be closed along with most other places.  Don’t panic – it’s a great opportunity to head to Geelong and the Geelong Heritage Centre.

Why not make a day of it?

Digitising Shire of Bellarine Rate Books

Who lived here?Well, this is definitely an experiment – my first POLL and I have no idea what it will look like or how it will work!  So forgive me if I get it all wrong.  More and more people are trying to research where their ancestors lives, and who lived there before and after them.  Rate Books are a great tool for this type of research.

The Bellarine Historical Society in conjunction with the Geelong Heritage Centre are applying for a grant to digitise the Shire of Bellarine Rate and Valuation Books – one of the few former shires in the region that doesn’t have them digitised yet!  The digitised records will enable us to properly index them – the index will be online but not the digitised records – the grant will only cover so much and this is the first step!

We are gathering letters of support from organisations in our district but I wondered what sort of response we might get with a Blog Poll?

So here goes – the instructions say to paste this code … 🙂  Please participate and help us with the application!
