Latest additions to database

Geelong City Band Honor BandThe latest additions to the Geelong and District database are a real mixture.  Of particular interest are two indexes from the late Brian Fallon – WWI volunteers and soldiers’ awards in our region.  There are a multitude of on-line databases for researching our WWI ancestors, however these indexes produced by Brian over many years are well worth including in our local database.

This is the list of additions since 30 December making a total of 1,319,039 entries in the database:

  • Geelong District: Honor Boards [additions] – 197 entries
  • Geelong District: WWI Volunteers [Brian Fallon Index] – 2,436 entries
  • Geelong District: WWI Soldiers’ Awards [Brian Fallon Index] – 241 entries
  • Geelong District: Police Court Reports from the Geelong Advertiser 1850-1856 – 1,881 entries
  • Geelong District: Geelong Court of Insolvency c.1854-1933 [VPRS 815], miscellaneous files – 322 entries
  • Geelong District: Crown Land – Petition for Wetern Baths jetty and bath houses [VPRS 242] – 155 entries
  • South Barwon: Court of Petty Sessions Registers 1867 [VPRS 350] – 136 entries

Details on these indexes can be found in the Geelong & District Potpourri pages.

And don’t forget to search again for your ancestors in the Geelong & District Database – they could have been in the last load of additions!

Midwives and their registration

ALBERD familyPeople seem to be fascinated with midwives – 3,882 hits on the Geelong and District Midwives information page is certainly proof of this.  That is more than double that of the next most accessed page – see the stats on the Potpourri Indexes page.

With that in mind, we’ve specifically targetted midwives adding almost 500 entries from the Registration of Midwives lists from the Victorian Government Gazette.  And of course the major benefit of these is that additional information such as address can be viewed free online – a link has been provided to the VGG on the State Library of Victoria web site.  Each record from this source includes the date and issue number of the gazette to ensure you can find it easily.  Some entries came under the category of married or change of name giving both the married and maiden names of the midwife – a great resource!

This is the list of additions since 25 December making a total of 1,313,653 entries in the database:

  • South Barwon: Court of Petty Sessions Registers 1865-1869 except 1867 [VPRS 350] – 672 entries
  • Mt Moriac: Court of Petty Session Registers 1878-1886 [VPRS 335] – 610 entries
  • Geelong District: Geelong Times – Admissions to Geelong Hospital 1878-1879 – 312 entries
  • Colac: Court of Petty Sessions Registers 1860-1861 [VPRS 301] – 204 entries
  • Geelong District: names from the Geelong Times 1874-1899 – 906 entries
  • Drysdale: Police Occurrences Book 1859-1863 [VPRS 1488] – 45 entries
  • Geelong District: midwives [Birth certificates and Victorian Government Gazette registrations] – 490 entries

Details on these indexes can be found in the Geelong & District Potpourri pages.

And don’t forget to search again for your ancestors in the Geelong & District Database – they could have been in the last load of additions!

Colac in North Carolina!

It was an exciting time for our region last Thursday [19th May] … Colac & District Historical Society were joint winners in their category in the Sir Rupert Hamer Records Management Awards!

Not only was it exciting for them to win the award but their entry is an amazing story.  Their member, Dawn Peel, was the instigator when she found a reference to the Colac Court of Petty Sessions 1849-1860 in the special collections at Duke University, Durham, North Carolina.  She thought it was an error until the duty librarian scanned the first few pages … they included the name of Hugh MURRAY (pictured) … she then knew it was no error.

You can read the whole story on the PROV Wiki site.  This is an amazing blend of history and technology … a digital copy of the register is available on a server in the United States, the story and full transcription of the register is on a server at the Public Record Office Victoria, and the full index is included in the Geelong & District database on yet another server in Victoria!

Congratulations to Dawn and the Colac & District Historical Society on their win in the category “Community Archives – providing enhanced records access” and congratulations also to the Knox Historical Society for their project on school photos – both were worthy joint winners.

All category winners can be seen on the PROV web site with more details on the projects to be added there later.
