Midwives and their registration

People seem to be fascinated with midwives – 3,882 hits on the Geelong and District Midwives information page is certainly proof of this.  That is more than double that of the next most accessed page – see the stats on the Potpourri Indexes page.

With that in mind, we’ve specifically targetted midwives adding almost 500 entries from the Registration of Midwives lists from the Victorian Government Gazette.  And of course the major benefit of these is that additional information such as address can be viewed free online – a link has been provided to the VGG on the State Library of Victoria web site.  Each record from this source includes the date and issue number of the gazette to ensure you can find it easily.  Some entries came under the category of married or change of name giving both the married and maiden names of the midwife – a great resource!

This is the list of additions since 25 December making a total of 1,313,653 entries in the database:

• South Barwon: Court of Petty Sessions Registers 1865-1869 except 1867 [VPRS 350] – 672 entries
• Mt Moriac: Court of Petty Session Registers 1878-1886 [VPRS 335] – 610 entries
• Geelong District: Geelong Times – Admissions to Geelong Hospital 1878-1879 – 312 entries
• Colac: Court of Petty Sessions Registers 1860-1861 [VPRS 301] – 204 entries
• Geelong District: names from the Geelong Times 1874-1899 – 906 entries
• Drysdale: Police Occurrences Book 1859-1863 [VPRS 1488] – 45 entries
• Geelong District: midwives [Birth certificates and Victorian Government Gazette registrations] – 490 entries
